. staten island now stands at 12 out of a growing death toll of about 60 americans. chris christie was with president obama today, touring some of the communities in ruin along the shoreline. both politicians and leaders going out of their way to emphasize that day three of this natural disaster is still no time for partisan politics. >> i want to thank the president. we spent a significant afternoon together, surveying the coastline. we were on marine one together, and we had an opportunity to discuss it it at length. go to the shelter, have him see people's concerns. we have lots of challenges. challenges now to get back to normalcy. so we need to get power restored as quickly as possible. make sure people have clean drinks water. hospitals are taken care of, and that we get kids back to school. i'm pleased to report that he has sprung into action immediately to help give us those things while we're in the car riding together. he worked incredibly closely with me since before the storm hit. i think this is our sixth conversation since the weekend, it's been a great working relati

, it is not halloween because it cannot be halloween ever. today governor chris christie postponed halloween today by executive order for the whole state of new jersey, the state hardest hit by hurricane sandy. they will be moving halloween to monday, monday, november 5th, in order to protect new jersey's young trick-or-treaters from floodwaters and live wires and downed trees. these crews were fixing fallen power lines in toms river, new jersey, today. nearly 2 million households in new jersey are still without electricity today, day three. for reference in terms of how much of the country that means, even if there were only one person in each of the new jersey households without power, which is t isn't true, even if it was just one, the number of households without power in new jersey means there are more people in day three than the population of each of these states that is marked on the map this is a huge number of americans we are talking about here. and this is not over. this is not something that is done. it is not past tense. widespread flooding is still present. and the national guard to

did not. there's been a bit of a political pushback going on this evening. governor chris christie earlier this afternoon called out atlantic city mayor admonishing him for keeping shelters on this barrier island instead of bussing people off the island as they did last year during irene. and that's why we have a situation. let's walk over here and show you what the rest o of atlantic city is dealing with. this is an access ramp that takes you up to the boardwalk. so these are the streets of atlantic city down here. this is what it looks like. several feet of water covering the street. and here's where things became a problem. you have 400 people on the other side of the city who decided to ride out the storm and stay in their homes and as we talked earlier today, flood water was coming into those homes and there was no way for local emergency crews to get to them. so they had to mobilize national guard units to get those people out of their homes. things got so dangerous they had to pull the personnel back. so there were a couple hundred people still in their homes on the bay side

new jersey governor chris christie who said to people that they need to get out of many of these coastal areas including atlantic city which was hit very hard, under water. well, he had a very angry reaction when the mayor suggested to some people that they could hunker down. here's what governor chris christie said earlier today. >> this is not a time to be a showoff. this is not a time to be stupid. this is putting first responders in significant, significant danger. and it is not fair to their families for you to be putting them in that danger because you decided that you wanted to be hardheaded. >> and, again, at this hour, sandy is still a massive storm. walloping the eastern seaboard. it did make landfall along the jersey east. joining me by phone, adam grossman of the new jersey office of emergency management. adam, what can you tell us at this hour? what's the situation? where are you most concerned? >> our concerns are statewide. we are going to continue to monitor as the night moves along and get into the morning hours, like the governor stated we're not going

and governor chris christie of new jersey are expected to be in newark. obviously that report from the hoboken mayor, from dawn zimmer is very distressing, the idea there might be as many as 20,000 people in hoboken who haven't been rescued because they're physically not accessible. that the vehicles have not made it to hoboken to get those people out of where they need to be gotten out of. that's very distressing news but top level leadership from the country going there at least for a photo-op, hopefully that results in faster action in the city of hoboken. all right. the storm which has made things so tough on so many in the east today has also provided a window into the leadership styles of the men competing to be president of the united states for the next four years. some news on that is coming up.
